The word Deacon comes from a New Testament term meaning “servant” and “ministry”. The first mention of Deacons is in Acts 6:1-7, when they are appointed to handle ministry and care for the needs of the local body of believers.

Deacons at Westover Church serve to support our Elders, Staff, and the entire body of Christ. Deacons at Westover have two primary responsibilities – Administration and Ministry. Our Deacons are divided into four functioning teams – Facilities, Finances, Care of the Body, and Ministry Facilitation.

Provide ministry to those in the church who are in need. They are responsible for the care and maintenance of the property of the church. They work with operations and facilities staff to provide oversight of janitors and administrative staff, as well as handle routine fiscal matters relating to the general fund of Westover.

The Biblical qualifications of a Deacon are outlined in 1 Timothy 3:8-13.

“Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain. They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. And let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless. Their wives likewise must be dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded, faithful in all things. Let deacons each be the husband of one wife, managing their children and their own households well. For those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.” 

Deacons are called and appointed by God, confirmed by the church body, and commissioned to minister within the local body of believers. They are responsible for modeling biblical lifestyles. Hebrews 13:7 and 17 emphasize both the responsibility to live as an example, manifesting virtue in his lifestyle, and the church’s desire to follow this example.

Deacon candidates must be at least 25 years old and a member of the Church for at least one year. On-board Deacons identify qualified individuals and presents them to the Elders, then to the membership of Westover for confirmation each year. Deacon candidates are selected by observing their life and ministry as they serve at Westover. There is a formal interview process with each candidate. Once confirmed by the Elders and membership these individuals serve a four-year term as Deacon.

The four Deacon sub-teams are Facilities, Finances, Care of the Body, and Ministry Facilitation.

The Facilities Team serves to ensure oversight and administration of Westover’s facilities is God-honoring.

The Finances Team serves to provide oversight of the general fund at Westover and all budgeting.

The Care of the Body Team serves to ensure the body of Christ is effectively cared for and ministered to.

The Ministry Facilitation Team serves to assist in facilitating the effective ministry of staff and volunteers.
